OKLAHOMA CITY, Airpark — A suspect in a stabbing and armed with a knife was shot and killed by two officers with the Oklahoma City Police Department Sunday afternoon.

Police have now identified the one shot by police as:

  • Sergio Gruver, 21.

The two officers who fired the fatal shots are:

  • Sgt. Dustin Wright
  • Officer Jesus Hernandez

It was police shooting #10 and homicide #63 for the City of Oklahoma City in 2022.

Sunday, police received calls about a “disturbance involving a man with a knife,” Public Information Officer Capt. Valerie Littlejohn told Free Press by phone Sunday.

Gruver, the man with the knife and suspect in a stabbing, was confronted by three officers after being sent to 1316 S.W. 25th in the Airpark neighborhood around 2:25 p.m.

“When officers arrived, they confronted the armed man, gave him commands, he refused their commands to drop the knife,” continued Littlejohn.

One of the three officers deployed his Taser twice. Both deployments were ineffective, said Littlejohn.

According to Littlejohn, Gruver continued to hold onto his knife and “wasn’t following commands.”

The other two officers were covering the suspect as the third deployed the Taser. Littlejohn said the suspect “turned toward the officer with the Taser in a threatening manner.”

That was when the other two officers, Wright and Hernandez, fired on the suspect.

Gruver was transported to a local hospital where he died from his wounds.

From further investigation, police believe that before the officers’ arrival, Gruver “stabbed someone randomly near the residence” and “tried to attack his family members with the knife while they were still inside the locked car.”

The man who had been stabbed before police arrived is listed as having “non-life-threatening injuries.”

The investigation is still in its early stages, said Littlejohn.

Note: As of publication, the information provided by the OKCPD has not yet been tested in court. Under the law, all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty before a jury of their peers or a plea of guilt.
