OKLAHOMA CITY — In a search for a felony suspect Tuesday, three officers with the Oklahoma City Police Department (OKCPD) exchanged fire with the suspect who died from his wounds at the scene.

One officer was hit with bullet fragments but sustained “non-life-threatening” wounds.

The shootout occurred in a mobile home in the far southeastern rural area of the Oklahoma City limits at 14000 Iron Road, just a few miles from Lake Thunderbird and near the intersection of S. Harrah Road and SE 149th Street.

Search on a tip

Some early news accounts said that another police agency asked the OKCPD to assist with a search for a person who was a suspect in a felony.

But, according to OKCPD Capt. Valerie Littlejohn on Wednesday, later investigation shows that a person who is with another agency saw the suspect — 38-year-old Timothy Johnson — recognized him, and called in a tip to OKCPD that the suspect was in the mobile home.

Shootout

After officers got consent to search the trailer, they entered and started a search, according to a press release.

“While searching the trailer, officers lifted a mattress that covered a storage area. When the mattress was lifted, officers saw Mr. Johnson hiding in the storage area, armed with a pistol. Mr. Johnson immediately opened fire on the officers. All three officers returned fire and retreated to an area of safety outside of the trailer,” said the press release.

The three officers are:

  • Sgt. Cody Rodgers
  • Officer David Mauck
  • Officer Elisa McCoy

One officer was hit in the face with either flying debris or bullet shards according to Captain Littlejohn, but is okay.

The officers didn’t know the condition of the suspect at first and called in the OKCPD Tactical Unit whose members entered the trailer and found Johnson dead from his wounds sustained in the shootout.

All three officers are now on administrative leave until the investigation of the shooting is complete.
