S. Reidy is no stranger to big surprises.
The Norman-based rapper, songwriter, and hometown hero is as likely to end a show hanging from the rafters as he is to get a pizza delivered on stage in the middle of a music festival. So he’s pretty well-versed in surprise.
But for one of the most irrepressibly energetic and unabashedly open artists in the scene to drop a full album with no warning, no preamble, and no emotional pre-release plea in the pre-order and early-stream-dominated landscape of 2026 is pretty remarkable.
That it’s also surely his most personal, his most probing, and his straight-up best work just makes the surprise that much sweeter.
The stylistically titled “?YouShouldWait?” sees Reidy digging deep and unpacking not only his hunger and desire for more life and more time to continue collecting experiences and making mistakes, but also his own self-confrontation about why he deserves it…or maybe even why he doesn’t.
Opener “You” sees Reidy – or at least a hypothetical analog for him – with a literal gun to his head and an ultimatum to justify his life with something funny or clever, but all the rapper can offer is the album title, presumably just as confused and frantic as the way it’s written.
But it’s not just the question that’s being asked of him. His reply is a question. The album’s title is a question. It’s all questioning, it’s all searching.
Each new track is a new question: “Is this a safe space?” “Who was that?” “Can you feel it?” “Where are my friends tonight?” “Is it like ecstasy?” even “What is it like living in Oklahoma?” Question after question in the name of soul-searching, yes, but these are also his fears, his uncertainties, and his guilts.

All of the asking reads more like Reidy looking over his shoulder for the monsters that might be chasing him, addressing himself, dropping references to “Regular Show” and Cheetos and “Dragonball” and Insane Clown Posse like little emotional breadcrumbs of his own memories so that he can find his way back to himself.
There are few other artists in Oklahoma, in fact, that are as willing to turn their writing around and have a conversation with themselves, and this album takes that inclination and chases it down at full speed.
Reidy’s work is always emotional, of course, but “?YouShouldWait?” feels like something more than that. It’s vulnerable.
These songs aren’t just laying out Reidy’s worries and grievances, they’re attempting to open up the wounds themselves and put them on display, even it means letting them bleed again.
And that’s why it all works so well musically, too.
Sure, the stars of the show are Reidy’s voice and lyrics, but the production underneath is just as big a part of the storytelling on “?YouShouldWait?”
Nearly every song reflects that same vulnerability with a kind of deconstructed minimalism that provides almost no heavier or denser production for Reidy to hide behind.
From the first bars onward, most every track is little more than a stripped-down backbeat and an acoustic guitar, like a post-modern, 21st century rap version of a singer-songwriter record.
Centerpiece track “??????” deconstructs it all even further, removing even the beat and providing Reidy with nothing but a rhythmless, reversing wash of ambience to rap over.
But it all fits together like a shockingly cohesive piece, repeatedly stripping away or adding elements to aid in the soul-searching and big questions.
Even the (admittedly few) guest spots feel like a part of the bigger story being told, with breakout rapper/poet R.A.P. Ferreira’s verse on standout track “Bygone Days” playing less like an MC handing the mic to a collaborator and more like a true conversation, like Reidy externalizing the same big questions and allowing a friend to ask them instead.
The result is surely Reidy’s personal best album, or at least his most fully-realized and most open-hearted offering yet, and one that hits your gut even harder because it came as such a surprise.
So maybe he’s never fully able to come up with a line funny enough to spare his life or a definitive answer for why – or even if – his life, his love, and his own ambition should slow down and wait for him to catch up.
But if he’s got a few more albums like this one still in the chamber, well, I’d say that’s as good a reason as any.
