(Oklahoma City, OK) – Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) invites caregivers of children who will be entering prekindergarten (Pre-K) or kindergarten in fall 2024 to informational sessions at select elementary schools in the coming months, as well as a Facebook Live event this evening. Parents and guardians will have the opportunity to ask questions about the enrollment process as well as the overall program on the OKCPS Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/OKCPublicSchools/) from 6:30pm to 7:30pm.
At these meetings, Early Childhood educators will be sharing information about the registration process and what to expect from curriculum and programming. OKCPS families with children who will be at least 4 years old on or before September 1, 2024 are invited to attend these sessions. Spanish interpretation will be available at all meetings.
Young children who attend Pre-K learn important skills and keys to the child’s future learning, the most impactful for later success being:
- executive functioning skills
- learning to get along with others
- conversing with other children and adults
- asking questions and planning
- emotional regulation
OKCPS has one of the most robust and accessible Pre-K programs in the state, with full-day, free Pre-K and kindergarten. The district has free, full-day pre-kindergarten (Pre-K) (http://www.okcps.org/prek) seats available to accommodate four-year-olds residing within district boundaries as well as those in surrounding communities where their home districts may be at capacity. OKCPS is one of just a few that does not have waitlists or lotteries and is inviting families to transfer in (https://okcps.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1LeNrgtx7MNGx70) and join the OKCPS family!
“While Pre-K is not a mandatory grade level, it is extremely important,” said Dr. Stephanie Hinton, Director of Early Childhood for OKCPS. “Children who attend Pre-K are set up for success through the experiences they have throughout the grade in hands-on, play-based learning. We plan seats for EVERY child, which allows us to have more learning structure and extremely qualified teachers.”
