Suspect arrested for a homicide from early in 2022

OKLAHOMA CITY — The suspect in the second homicide of 2022 was arrested Tuesday by the Oklahoma City Police.

Kody Robert Melendez, 32, was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center (Jail) Tuesday afternoon on the complaint of murder in the first degree. Bond was set for $10 million.

Melendez is the suspect in the shooting death of Donnell Smith at a business in the 9800 block of Spencer-Jones Road in early January of 2022.

Police believe that the two were engaged in an argument in the parking lot of the business when Melendez shot and killed Smith.

Melendez then fled the scene of the shooting.

Smith was taken to Midwest City Hospital where he was pronounced dead from his wounds.

In 2022, MSgt. Gary Knight with OKCPD said that there were “a number of witnesses” to the argument in the parking lot where the shooting occured.

Free Press reported the homicide at the time:
