Quick response averts violence when student brings gun to school

OKLAHOMA CITY — A quick response by Oklahoma City Public Schools staff to a photo of a student with a gun on campus led to the disarming and arrest of the student without any injuries Friday.

“On March 3, OKCPS school and district leaders quickly took action to investigate a report of a photo depicting an Emerson North student in possession of a weapon,” read a statement from OKCPS administration.

“A weapon was found on our campus as a result of this investigation. OKCPS is thankful to our law enforcement partners who retrieved the weapon and removed the student involved.”

Officers with the Oklahoma City Police Department were called to Emerson North Alternative School at 715 N. Walker on information the district had that one particular student had a gun on campus according to a press release from OKCPD.

When officers arrived they were directed to a classroom where the student was located. There police disarmed him and took him into custody.

The suspect is an adjudicated juvenile and convicted felon, according to the police statement. The handgun is listed as stolen.

He was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center and booked.

“The safety and security of our students and staff is the top priority for OKCPS and weapons of any kind are not permitted on our campuses,” said the OKCPS statement. “Any item that might threaten or even imitate a threat to our students or staff is strictly prohibited. Threats or threatening behavior will not be tolerated.”

The district asks staff, students, and families to help the district provide a safe environment by reporting any suspicious or threatening behavior directly to the school or to the OKCPS 24-hour hotline at (405) 587-SAFE.
