OKLAHOMA CITY (Dec. 18, 2024) – The Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) Foundation, in partnership with the OKC Thunder and LiveFree OKC, dedicated a new ReadOKC Little Library yesterday at Eastpoint, located at 1740 NE 23rd St.

Little Libraries are free book-sharing spaces that provide students, families and community members with access to books, to help foster a love of reading and strengthen community connections. This event highlighted the importance of partnerships and expanding opportunities across Oklahoma City.

A group of students from Thelma Parks Elementary joined OKCPS educators, community leaders and representatives from OKC Thunder and LiveFree OKC to mark the occasion. The event featured remarks from OKCPS Foundation President & CEO Kendra Horn and executive director of LiveFree OKC Jabee Williams, who also created an inspiring mural for the site.

“The ReadOKC Little Library at Eastpoint is one of 69 ReadOKC Little Libraries located throughout Oklahoma City. This network ensures that all children can find reading materials, regardless of zip code or income,” said Kendra Horn. “We are building a community of readers, and this Little Library will help students and families establish a home library filled with the books they love. We couldn’t do this without incredible community partners like the OKC Thunder and LiveFree OKC.”

Jabee Williams shared how this collaboration ties into LiveFree OKC’s mission of building peace and reducing violence in Oklahoma City, stating, “This Little Library is about creating access and opportunity for historically underserved communities. When we invest in resources like this, we’re giving families and students the tools to learn, grow and thrive in a world that hasn’t always prioritized our needs.”

The OKC Thunder, who are steadfast OKCPS champions, now steward two ReadOKC Little Libraries, including one at Scissortail Park. “The Thunder is honored to support the ReadOKC Little Library initiative. We believe every child deserves access to books and the opportunity to build a love of learning that will guide them throughout their lives”, said Erin Oldfield, Vice President of Community Engagement and Executive Director of the Thunder Community Foundation.

Following the dedication, students browsed the Little Library, selected a book to take home and enjoyed hot chocolate and holiday treats. Each student received a backpack, scarf and beanie from the OKC Thunder.

The ReadOKC Little Library initiative is part of the OKCPS Foundation’s efforts to instill a love of reading among OKCPS students and the broader community. From Reading Challenges and ReadOKC On the Go! Book Buses, to Reading Buddies and Book Clubs, ReadOKC provides resources and mentorship to help build confidence and strong reading habits.
