PRESS RELEASE: OKCMOA presents ‘Indigenous Art of the Pacific Northwest Coast: An Introduction’ April 27

The Oklahoma City Museum of Art (OKCMOA) sends the information below:

Alongside the soon-to-close “Raven and the Box of Daylight,” OKCMOA will present “Indigenous Art of the Pacific Northwest Coast: An Introduction” on April 27th from 11:00a, to 12:00pm.

This lecture will be led by America Meredith, publishing editor of First American Art Magazine and an art writer, critic, visual artist, and independent curator.

Between the mountain rainforests and the Pacific Ocean in Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon, live diverse Indigenous nations with rich legacies in visual arts. In addition to formline design, the region also boasts some of the world’s most complex textile practices, including Chilkat and Ravenstail weaving. Northwest Coast arts also include a variety of other mediums, such as monumental woodcarving, metalsmithing, basketry, and printmaking.

Thanks to the vision of Tlingit artist Preston Singletary, glass sculpture has also gained prominence in the region. Throughout the years, many talented Indigenous artists have emerged from the Pacific Northwest, showcasing their unique styles and honoring their cultural heritage. From the past to the present day, these artists have made significant contributions to the world of art, and their influences continue to expand.
