OKLAHOMA CITY – Eight Metro Tech students were selected as recipients of the Metro Tech Foundation’s Sowing the Seeds of Success Scholarships. A total of $9,000 was distributed amongst the students at the 14th annual banquet on Friday, April 12th, at the Oklahoma History Center.
Scholarships recipients are:
Donminic Goosby II, HVAC, Riley Lindley, Computer Science – $1,000 Dye Family Scholarships
Brooklyn McCauley, Surgical Technology – $2,000 Dr. James Branscum “Character First” Scholarship
Isabel Tavarez, Biomedical Science – $1,000 “#BeLikeKeith” Memorial Scholarship
Blanca Alvarado, Jada Freeman, Biomedical Sciences – $1,000 Dr. Dennis L. Portis, III Memorial Scholarships
Kelly Rhone, Practical Nursing – $1,000 Dr. Donna Neal Thomas Scholarship
Juana Guerrero Martinez, Accounting – $1,000 Mark Vincent Memorial Scholarship
HVAC student Donminic Goosby II and Computer Science student Riley Lindley are recipients of the $1,000 Dye Family Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded in honor of Mike Dye, who “worked his way to the top” by starting his career in the transportation industry as a parts delivery person and years later became the owner of two trailer dealerships.
The $2,000 Dr. James Branscum “Character First” scholarship recipient is Surgical Technology student Brooklyn McCauley. This scholarship is awarded in honor of former Metro Tech Superintendent Dr. James Branscum.
The $1,000 “#BeLikeKeith” Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Biomedical Sciences student Isabel Tavarez. This is the second year the scholarship will be incorporated into the banquet and is awarded in memory of the late Foundation board member, Keith D. Magill.
Biomedical Sciences students Blanca Alvarado and Jada Freeman are recipients of the $1,000 Dr. Dennis L. Portis, III Memorial Scholarships awarded in memory of the late Metro Tech Associate Superintendent and former instructor at the STEM Academy.
Practical Nursing student Kelly Rhone is the recipient of the $1,000 Dr. Donna Neal Thomas Scholarship provided by the Mary Mahoney Memorial Health Center in honor of Dr. Thomas.
The recipient of the $1,000 Mark Vincent Memorial Scholarship is Juana Guerrero Martinez, an Accounting student at the Business Technology Center on the Springlake Campus.
This scholarship recognizes highly motivated students pursuing continuing education at a career tech, a public college, or a university. It honors former Metro Tech Chief Officer of Institutional Research and U.S. Air Force Veteran Dr. Mark Vincent.
Martinez is an immigrant from Mexico who moved to the U.S. with her family when she was 12. Despite her challenges while navigating a new language, she is determined to earn her accounting certification to help her family succeed.
“My family wants to start a construction business, and I want to be able to do accounting work for them,” Martinez said. “The biggest challenge I have faced is learning a new language, but my family and my support system at Metro Tech have kept me motivated.”
Metro Tech Foundation Executive Director Ashleigh Gibson says the Foundation greatly values the opportunity to recognize the students’ hard work.
“Our mission is to support the students of Metro Tech by identifying financial barriers and ensuring they have access to all the resources we work hard to develop,” Gibson said. “The Sowing the Seeds of Success Banquet serves as an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments and the work that the Foundation is doing to help them achieve their goals.”
