PRESS RELEASE: OKC celebrates Bike Month in May

The City of OKC sends this information as posted below:

May is National Bike Month, and Oklahoma City is inviting everyone to celebrate with fun and educational activities for cyclists of all ages and skill levels.

“May weather brings a great opportunity for our community to enjoy our bike lanes and trails around the city,” Oklahoma City’s Transportation Planner Justin Henry said. “With so many of our new facilities like the Deep Fork Trail and the bike lanes being added by MAPS 4, more residents than ever are connected to our facilities. Group activities like Bike to Work Day and BikeFest are great opportunities for those new to cycling to meet and ride with more experienced cyclists.”

BikeFest – May 4

Cyclists, families and outdoor enthusiasts are invited to BikeFest 2025, a free festival dedicated to the benefits of bicycling. The festival will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, at Wheeler Park at 1120 S. Western Ave.

Participants can test-ride demo bikes from local shops, get a free bike tune-up, enjoy live music, and order food from food trucks. Kids can also take part in safety demos and decorate their bikes with materials.

BikeFest is hosted by acog. For details, visit bikemonthok.org.

National Bike and Roll to School Day – May 7

Families are encouraged to bike and roll to school with their children during National Bike and Roll to School Day, May 7. BikeWalkOKC, the City’s plan for cycling infrastructure, prioritizes sidewalks and bike lanes near schools and libraries.

According to the National Center for Safe Routes to School, being able to walk and ride a bike in the community gives children a strong sense of self-confidence and a better quality of life.

Cyclists can beat the traffic, get some fresh air and enjoy free coffee in Bicentennial Park, 201 N. Walker Ave., from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Friday, May 16, when they participate in Bike to Work Day.

OKC continues to invest in bike lanes and trails

Construction is underway on bike lanes citywide thanks to investments included in MAPS 4, the Better Streets, Safer City bond election and grants.

Bike lane locations are selected based on the bikewalkokc plan, which identifies priorities and key connections for cyclists. The City installs several types of bike facilities, including protected bike lanes and multi-use trails, standard bike lanes and shared route facilities.

People can visit okc.gov to see of map of active bike projects.

The Oklahoma City trails system offers recreation and exercise fun along a network of interconnected trails that can take pedestrians and cyclists to almost every point in the City. Click on the interactive map on okc.gov to see trail locations and distances.

“MAPS 4 alone will spend more about $30 million on bike lanes and trails around Oklahoma City, and that work has only just begun,” Henry said.

Bike safety

Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians have a shared responsibility to watch out for each other and follow the rules of the road.

People can visit okc.gov/residents/bike-lane-safety for tips on navigating Oklahoma City streets on two or four wheels. The website watchformeok.org also provides pro-safety tips for pedestrians, drivers and bicyclists.

The bikewalkokc plan outlines the framework for expanded bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in OKC. It includes plans for a network of trails, bike lanes, bike routes and sidewalks. Visit bikewalkokc.org to learn more.
