PRESS RELEASE: Ceramic murals complete Better Streets, Safer City project in Paseo Arts District

The City of Oklahoma City and the Paseo Arts District send this information as posted below:

Three new ceramic tile murals, paying homage to the district’s rich history, are now installed in the Paseo Arts District.

Local mother-daughter artist duo Nicole and Aztrid Moan wanted to honor the City’s history while celebrating the district’s growth.

Onlookers will see unique scenes within each of the three six-foot-wide murals. First, there is “The Paseo Plunge,” a public swimming pool built in 1933. Next, a mural titled “Restaurant Poetry Reading” highlights the history of poetry reading at neighborhood restaurants and tells the story of Paseo’s history as a gathering space for artists. The last scene, “Paseo Art Walk,” shows Paseo’s vibrancy as a modern-day enclave for art galleries and space for the community to meet and eat.

“The Paseo has been a focal point of art and culture since it was built in the 1920s,” Program Planner Randy Marks said. “Like Greenwich Village in New York, it keeps on finding ways to reinvent itself and stay vibrant. These murals by Nicole and Aztrid pay homage to the history of this singular street and neighborhood, which are vital components of Oklahoma City’s idea of itself. This is one of the things that public art can do: crystallize feelings of pride and community spirit into a tangible work of art.”

Local artist Scott Henderson constructed frames for the ceramic murals.

Paseo project background

The City worked with stakeholders in the Paseo Arts District to create significant streetscape improvements. Public art was notably important to the stakeholders, which led the City to allocate funds for public art construction.

The voter-approved Better Streets, Safer City project, completed in 2024, focused on improving the district’s walkability and ADA access by replacing sidewalks, repaving streets and upgrading handicapped parking.
