Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt, the OKC City Council, City leadership and the South Oklahoma City Kiwanis Club recognized two public safety employees for their outstanding achievements on Tuesday for their dedication, professionalism and commitment to OKC residents.
Police Officer of the Year
Sgt. William Reyes of the Oklahoma City Police Department demonstrated bravery and care when he saved a man from a 40-foot fall off the Exchange Avenue bridge. Acting swiftly, Sgt. Reyes, with the help of two residents, pulled the man to safety. The man was uninjured.
“Sgt. Reyes acted without concern for his own safety, placing himself in great peril, as he could have easily been pulled over the railing by the man’s weight,” OKCPD Lt. Nathan Fields said. “The heroism Sgt. Reyes demonstrated during this incident is a testament to his commitment to the most fundamental tenet of police service – protection of life.”
Firefighter of the Year
As the Oklahoma City Fire Department’s assistant public information officer, Capt. John Chenoweth plays a vital role, especially during emergencies. His commitment to providing accurate and timely information helps manage public expectations, enhances the department’s transparency and builds trust within the community.
“Capt. Chenoweth’s focus on promoting life safety and ensuring our community stays informed reflects his unwavering commitment to excellence,” OKC Fire Chief Richard Kelley said. “Moreover, his dedication to showcasing the exceptional work of our personnel demonstrates his deep respect for his colleagues and his passion for public service.”
Congratulations to Sgt. Reyes and Capt. Chenoweth.
