OKLAHOMA CITY [October 2, 2024] – The Asian District Cultural Association, in collaboration with renowned artists Denise Duong and Gabriel Friedman, is proud to announce the installation of “We Have Arrived,” a commemorative art piece in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnamese American community’s Boat People’s Journey. This significant milestone will be marked with a special unveiling ceremony in late Spring 2025 at Military Park in OKC’s Asian District. As the project kicks off Phase 1 this Fall, the community is encouraged to visit the Association’s booth at this weekend’s Asian Night Market, October 4 and 5, to donate and learn more about the project and commemoration.
The commissioned art piece symbolizes the resilience, courage, and enduring spirit of the Vietnamese refugees who embarked on perilous journeys to seek freedom and build new lives in America. The artwork is a temporary loan to the City of Oklahoma City, generously provided by the Asian District Cultural Association. The vote was passed unanimously by Oklahoma City’s City Council.
During the July 30 City Council meeting, Mayor Holt expressed gratitude for this meaningful contribution, stating “We are honored to host this beautiful piece of art that not only commemorates a pivotal moment in history but also celebrates the vibrant contributions of the Vietnamese American community to our city. This artwork serves as a poignant reminder of the strength and resilience of all those who seek a better life.”
