OKLAHOMA CITY — The shooting death of a man in 2021 is still under active investigation, and police believe there are people out there with information that could lead them to the perpetrator.
The fourth anniversary of the death of then 34-year-old Larry McDowell is Wednesday.
With minutes to go before midnight on June 11, 2021, patrol officers with the Oklahoma City Police Department were sent to 6250 S. Douglas Avenue in response to a shooting call.
When they arrived, they found that three people had been shot. One, McDowell, was pronounced dead at the scene, with the other two being taken to an area hospital where they eventually recovered from their wounds and were released.
From their interviews and investigation, detectives believe that the three were at an outdoor gathering that night when “someone began firing into the crowd,” according to Staff Sgt. Dillon Quirk with OCPD.
So far, no arrests have been made in this homicide investigation.
“This is not a cold case,” Quirk told Free Press by phone Tuesday. “We believe there’s somebody out there who has some answers to our questions that, for whatever reason, are not coming forward.”
But why is this not a cold case?
Quirk explained that detectives are “still following up on what information they can, such as evidence, witness statements (if any), etc.”
“A cold case becomes a cold case when it is not actively being investigated,” Quirk said. “We do have cold case investigators who follow up on investigations that are not actively being worked on. Remember, all cold cases are old, but not all old cases are cold.”
Police urge anyone with information to call the Homicide Tip Line at (405) 297-1200.
