OKLAHOMA CITY — Two Oklahoma City police officers are on routine administrative leave after firing at suspects during a foot chase in Bricktown over the weekend.
They fired and missed while pursuing two suspects close to 2 AM Saturday. The officers believed the suspects to be armed and responsible for firing multiple shots into a crowd of adults during a fight.
Four adults — two male, two female — were wounded by the gunfire.
The incident began when several officers were on foot patrol in Bricktown near the intersection of Sheridan Ave. and Oklahoma Ave.
A fight broke out nearby between adults and ended with gunfire wounding the four.
Officers chased two people “believed responsible for the shooting,” said OKCPD Public Information Officer Capt. Valerie Littlejohn in a press release.
Two of the pursuing officers fired at the two people but missed. The two suspects then continued to run from the police and were not caught.
No arrests have been made as of publication.
Police urge anyone with information to call the OKCPD Homicide Tip Line at 405/297-1200.
The officers
The two officers who fired their service weapons at the suspects are:
Travis Hinton – 33 years of service.
Reggie Smith – Six years of service.
This is the sixth police shooting for the Oklahoma City Police Department in 2024.
The internal investigation of the two officers now begins as they go on routine administrative leave.
In police shootings – internally termed “officer-involved shootings” – the officer goes on paid administrative leave while evidence is gathered by OKCPD investigators.
Then, that information is turned over to Oklahoma County District Attorney Vicki Behenna who has determined that all officer-involved shootings will go before a grand jury to decide whether to bring charges against the officer.
Once that decision has been made, then the internal investigation moves forward after questions about whether the shooting was a crime have been resolved.
