OK County Jail fight — one sent to hospital

OKLAHOMA CITY — One detainee of the Oklahoma County Detention Center (Jail) is recovering from injuries sustained during a fight involving multiple detainees.

Around 2:45 PM Tuesday, a fight between “several” detainees in one pod resulted in one detainee being badly injured enough to require a trip to the hospital according to a press release. There are four pods per floor above the ground floor.

Detention officers separated the parties to the fight and stopped further escalation according to Mark Opgrande, public information officer for the Jail. EMSA was called and took the detainee to the hospital where he was treated and released back to the jail by evening.

“Our staff did an excellent job in responding to end the fight and attend to the injured detainee. We will hold these detainees accountable for their actions,” said Jail CEO Brandi Garner in a prepared statement.

An investigation is underway. The parties to the fight may be charged once the facts of the incident are sorted out by the jail investigations team. The Oklahoma County DA may bring charges against detainees for crimes committed inside the facility once an investigation is complete.

Free Press will continue to monitor the Oklahoma County Jail.
