Metropolitan Library System starts 2024 with exciting program offerings

Metropolitan Library locations will be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024 and will reopen Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024. All guests are invited to enjoy our online library open 24 hours at metrolibrary.org.

Sound Bath Meditations at the Library

This January, Metro Library will introduce Sound Bath Meditations. Wellness practitioners Anna and Mark Miller will visit multiple libraries to offer their therapeutic and restorative practice for the mind and body using sound bowls and other instruments. Attendees are advised to bring a blanket, pillow, and yoga mat, and wear comfortable clothing. Sound Bath Meditations will be happening at five locations in January and will also continue through February.

Dolly Day on January 19
Celebrate Dolly Parton’s birthday on January 19 with “Dolly Day” at various Metropolitan Library System locations in support of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL). DPIL promotes early childhood literacy as well as fostering diversity awareness and a love for readingbyproviding one free book every month to children from birth to their fifth birthday. Join in the festivities, including a Dolly Day Guitar-Take-Home Kit, “The Little Engine That Could” scavenger hunt, and pop-up photo booths at select libraries. Young At Art: A Selection of Caldecott Book Illustrations continues at the Downtown OKC Library through Jan. 17

Explore the enchanting world of children’s literature at the Downtown OKC Library’s(300 Park Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73102) “Young at Art” exhibit, featuring original artwork by Caldecott winners and honorees from the 1920s to the 2010s. This event began December 18 and runs until January 17. The free exhibit offers a story walk and a reflection book with prompts. Children can enjoy related programming every Tuesday through Saturday, including a Caldecott storytime at 2:00 pm and “the Inspiration Lab” from 2:30-3:30 pm. Crowns Tea at the Library

“The Crowns Tea” hosted by Thick Descriptions celebrates the rich heritage of church hats, inspired by the book “Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats.” Attendees express cultural pride by showcasing their splendid headpieces, creating a vibrant tapestry of diversity. The event invites reflection on the historical significance of church hats, fostering intergenerational connections. Participants, dressed in their “Sunday Best,” contribute to a stylish celebration of heritage, tradition, and timeless elegance. “The Crowns Tea” transcends fashion, offering an enriching and unforgettable experience in African American culture.
