McDaniel resigns as supt of Okla City Public Schools

OKLAHOMA CITY — Dr. Sean McDaniel, superintendent of Oklahoma City Public Schools for six years, resigned his position Monday morning.

At publication, little more is known about either future plans of the district or McDaniel.

A news release with the announcement was sent from Board of Education Chair Paula Lewis around 11 AM Monday.

“The Board will be determining next steps in the coming weeks, including initiating a search for a new superintendent,” Lewis wrote. “Our board believes in transparency and is committed to keeping our community informed as we move through this process. First and foremost, our responsibility is to ensure we are taking care of students.”

“Through his six years with OKCPS, Dr. McDaniel has brought long-lasting change and an innovative approach to improving our district.”

“The board is thankful for Dr. McDaniel’s service over the last six years and is so proud of the stability in leadership he brought to OKCPS,” Lewis wrote.

Lewis pointed out the major accomplishments during McDaniel’s tenure:

  • Redesign of the entire district structure called “Pathway to Greatness.”
  • Movement forward on the districts 5-year Strategic Plan.
  • Leadership in developing a “whole new way of delivering education” in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • With the BOE, development and success in winning voters’ approval of the $955 million bond package in November 2022.
  • Progress in the area of workforce development out of commitment to students and “building relationships with our business community.”
  • Development of a “teacher pipeline” in partnership with the OKCPS Foundation.
  • Built a strong leadership team to “guide the critical work of our district.”
