OKLAHOMA CITY — A man who police say was pointing a gun at multiple people died in an exchange of gunfire with officers Thursday.
Officers with the Oklahoma City Police Department (OKCPD) were sent to 1316 NE 12th St. on a 911 domestic call reporting a man with a gun causing a disturbance.
The address is for the McGuire Plaza apartments, a highrise public housing facility for seniors near NE 12th and Lottie, and is managed by the Oklahoma City Housing Authority.
When officers arrived, they found Azjaynee Owens-Bey, “was armed with a gun,” according to a press release from OKCPD.
According to the police narrative, when officers arrived they found Owens-Bey pointing a gun at “numerous people.”
When he saw the officers, Owens-Bey ran into the lobby of the building still armed with his pistol.
According to the OKCPD narrative, “As officers entered the lobby area of the building, Mr. Owens-Bey pointed his firearm at officers and fired one shot at them. The incident ended when the armed suspect was shot and killed by MSgt. Daniel Higginbottom.”
No one else was reported injured.
MSgt. Higginbottom is now on routine administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation.
The OKCPD is counting the shooting as Officer-Involved Shooting #2 for 2023 and Homicide #65.
