List of new possible jail locations just got longer again

OKLAHOMA CITY — The list of sites being considered for the new Oklahoma County Jail just got longer once again.

The Board of Oklahoma County Commissioners just expanded the list of location possibilities again after having it narrowed down a couple of times.

Of the nine on the list for consideration in executive session Wednesday, some are new, and some are the same as considered before.

Two commissioners, Brian Maughan and Myles Davidson, and even leaders in the study group, CJAC, continue to stubbornly resist the current location of the jail in western downtown OKC and continue to entertain sale offers for parcels near already established neighborhoods and schools.

And, although Commissioner Carrie Blumert is submitting the existing Jail site now, she is also submitting other parcels near neighborhoods elsewhere in the metro.

Here is the current list as reflected in the agenda for the BoCC meeting Wednesday, Feb. 21:

Submitted by Commissioner Carrie Blumert

  • 160 acres located at the southwest corner of SW 74th & Rockwell offered for sale by Jason Thomas.
  • Existing jail site located at 201 N Shartel Avenue.
  • Up to 40 acres located near Reno and Exchange.
  • Up to 50 acres located near I 240 and Sunnylane offered by Best Choice Homes, LLC.

Submitted by Commissioner Myles Davidson

  • 71 acres of land located at 1901 E. Grand Boulevard and offered for sale by Willowbrook Investments LLC and Garrett & Company Resources LLC.

Submitted by Commissioner Bryan Maughan

  • 80 acres located at 3521 NE 23RD ST offered for sale by Arif Shakir.
  • 58.18 acres located at NE 63rd & Post Rd offered for sale by Doran Burns.
  • 61.43 acres of the Townley Trust land offered for sale by Kim Chandler on behalf of the Townley Trust.
  • 62.4 acres located at I-240 & Anderson Rd offered for consideration by Bryan Shuck.

No site, yet

It has been 10 months, or a year according to some, that the commissioners have been trying to locate a new jail site that didn’t have serious liabilities but to no conclusion so far.

Once, a parcel north of the Will Rogers World Airport seemed to be the most promising option at least for two of the commissioners, only to be rejected by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Then, as commissioners homed in on a parcel at 1901 E. Grand Blvd, the City of Del City residents and then the City of Del City government pushed back because it was so near to a thriving Del City neighborhood with an elementary school embedded it in.

The City Council for Del City passed a resolution to sue Oklahoma County if they used the location.

From the new list of land being considered, Davidson is still focused on the 1901 Grand site promoting the possibility of swapping land with the Crooked Oak School District that would allow them to build a new sports complex away from it instead of nextdoor where it is now.

This is our previous report about how that district is being drawn into this fight:

The Board of County Commissioners meets at 9:00 AM Wednesday, Feb 21 in the BoCC Meeting Room 204 in the Oklahoma County Courthouse Annex at 320 Robert S Kerr Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73102.

The meeting is livestreamed on the county’s YouTube channel.
