UPDATED – What we know about the Choctaw, Del City football game shootings

Choctaw, Del City (Okla) — Three people were shot, including one killed, and two wounded by gunfire, plus two more injured in the stampede that occurred when the shootings began Friday night at a football game in Choctaw.

The Del City (Mid-Del Schools) and Choctaw football game Friday in Choctaw was interrupted by the sounds of gunfire. Here is an X (Twitter) post from a sports reporting company:

From several different news sources and multiple news conferences and phone interviews, here is what we know so far about this shooting:

  • One 16-year-old male student was confirmed dead by Choctaw Police Chief Kelly Marshall later Friday evening. Mid-Del Superintendent Rick Cobb confirmed later that the student was in the Mid-Del system and expressed sorrow at the death. Officials have not released the name.
  • According to Chief Marshall, the Choctaw Police Department is investigating that homicide assisted by the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office.
  • UPDATE, Wednesday — Chief Marshall told Free Press in a phone call that the male suspect in the shooting death of the 16-year-old was captured around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday near NE 36th and Midwest Blvd.
  • UPDATE, Wednesday — The suspect is a minor so officials are not allowed to release a name or other details about the suspect. However, Chief Marshall said that if the DA has the suspect declared an adult, then they would be able to release much more information.
  • UPDATE, Wednesday — Marshall said that her agency was not in on the arrest but that the suspect was captured by a joint effort of the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Team, the Oklahoma City Police Department Violent Crimes Apprehension Team, and members of the United States Marshals Service.
  • UPDATE, Wednesday — Statement from Chief Marshall about the capture of the suspect: “My assistant chief who was the lead investigator, Mike Cunningham, along with Sergeant Sabrina Tice [OSCO] have worked nearly nonstop since this happened. They talked to over 30 people. They developed a lot of leads. Yesterday, they developed enough that they thought they had probable cause to get an arrest warrant. They did so. They met with all three warrant teams to brief them. And thankfully, it came to a conclusion with an arrest. And no one was hurt during that arrest.”
  • Also according to Chief Marshall, one female was shot in the leg, was treated, and released.
  • Two other students were reported injured in the rush of people attempting to get away from the shooting scene. One had a broken arm and the other a broken leg.
  • A 42-year-old man was shot in the chest by one of the two Dell City Police officers who were working security for the game on the Del City side of the stadium where the initial gunshots were fired. Life-saving measures were taken at the scene. The man was then taken to OU Trauma where he went into surgery and was reported by the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s office to be recovering at the hospital.
  • Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III held a news conference Monday where he said that his office is investigating the Del City officer’s shooting of the man. All Johnson would say Monday was that the officer “perceived some sort of threat” from the 42-year-old man he shot.
  • “It’s still being investigated as an officer-involved shooting even though he was technically off duty,” Johnson said in the news conference.
  • Del City Police Chief Lloyd Berger said later that evening that the Del City officers were “working that side of the game … on the Del City side.”
  • Berger said that both officers are on paid administrative leave as OCSO conducts the investigation. (update)
  • Seven Choctaw Police officers were at the game when the shootings occurred — 5 had been hired off-duty by the Choctaw School District to provide security and 2 on-duty Choctaw officers had also stopped by the game momentarily.
  • Other law enforcement agencies that responded to the situation were: Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Oklahoma City Police Department, Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office, Harrah Police Department, Jones Police Department, and others, said Chief Marshall.
