Town Hall on OK County Jail location postponed until Jan 29

-- To take up issues with placement options being explored by the Okla County Commissioners

OKLAHOMA CITY — A town hall meeting called by an assortment of Oklahoma Legislators, City of OKC City Councilors, and activists has been postponed until Monday due to freezing weather and hazardous roads.

The new date for the meeting will be Monday, January 29th in the auditorium at the MetroTech Springlake Campus at 1900 Springlake Drive in OKC.

The meeting is called to discuss concerns over the process of the Oklahoma County Commissioners attempts to choose a site for the new Oklahoma County Jail.

So far, their process has taken around 10 months with no resolution so far. However, time is running out due to time limits on ARPA funds meant for the mental health part of the facility and to start spending bond money in a bond that was past several years ago.

As the Commissioners continue to circle the county seeking a suitable site, some residents think they see a trend of looking for places where people with little economic or political power reside.

“Big questions about where we build a jail and how big we build it are being determined right now. The public’s involvement in this process is essential to gaining the best outcome for everyone,” said Jess Eddy, community activist and one of the organizers of the event.

“The people should have the best and most current information available about what is going on around this process to build a new jail,” he continued. “And they should have an opportunity to respond to these considerations and potentials before decisions are made and we’re all stuck with the consequences for a generation. The public must be fully involved.”
