NORMAN, OKLA. – The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History has achieved a significant milestone by receiving reaccreditation from the American Alliance of Museums), a distinction earned by about 3% of museums in the United States. This prestigious recognition underscores the museum’s commitment to excellence in collections stewardship, educational programming and ethical practices.
Accreditation by the AAM signifies that a museum meets rigorous standards and best practices. It serves as the gold standard for museum excellence and demonstrates an institution’s dedication to quality.
The Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History was first accredited in 1972 – one year after the AAM began reviewing institutions – and has continually maintained accreditation for 52 years since. Of the estimated 33,000 museums nationwide, only 1,112 hold the distinction of AAM accreditation, with the Sam Noble Museum being one of only 14 museums accredited in the state.
“Accreditation is a monumental achievement,” said Marilyn Jackson, AAM president & CEO. “The process demonstrates an institution’s commitment to best practices and is flexible enough to be accomplished by museums of any size.”
The reaccreditation process involves a thorough self-assessment by the museum, followed by peer review. Museums must demonstrate their suitability as educational entities and responsible stewards of collections and resources. The evaluation covers areas such as governance, collections care, public service and accessibility. Accreditation serves as an assurance to visitors, government agencies and the public that the museum adheres to the highest educational and ethical standards.
“This prestigious recognition validates our commitment to excellence in preserving and sharing the natural and cultural heritage of Oklahoma,” said Janet Braun, Ph.D., director of the Sam Noble Museum. “We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the University of Oklahoma administration, and the museum’s dedicated staff, volunteer, and supporters who have made this achievement possible.”
The Sam Noble Museum’s next reaccreditation self-study will begin in July 2033.
