Redesigned in collaboration with Chihuly Studio, Chihuly Then and Now: The Collection at Twenty incorporates a unique design featuring five decades of glass and works on paper, and tells a comprehensive story of Chihuly’s groundbreaking career. The exhibition allows visitors to explore works never before seen in OKC, along with OKCMOA visitor favorites including Neodymium Reeds, Ikebana Boat, and a redesigned Oklahoma Persian Ceiling.

ABOUT PRESTON SINGLETARY: RAVEN AND THE BOX OF DAYLIGHT
The multi-sensory experience combines glass, video, and audio to tell the story of Raven, a creator figure in Northwest Coast Native American culture, who was the giver of the stars, moon, and sun. Raven takes visitors on a transformative journey through darkness into light. In addition to Singletary’s striking glass pieces, the exhibition features storytelling paired with original music, coastal Pacific Northwest soundscapes, and video.

ABOUT TRANSLUCENT BODIES: THE FIGURE IN CONTEMPORARY STUDIO GLASS
While we encounter glass every day in various functional objects, it, as a medium, has several qualities that make it uniquely suited for artistic expression: its translucency, malleability, and its ability to capture light and color. The objects on view in this gallery play with these characteristics, using them to call to mind a face, a body, or the full human (or animal) form, either as a direct representation of its subject matter or in a state of symbolic transformation. With a range of glassmaking techniques, from the ancient to the innovative, artists mold, blow, or shape molten glass to suit their artistic vision.
Many of the artists in this gallery are associated with the Studio Glass movement that is itself almost synonymous with the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington, which Dale Chihuly co-founded. Exhibition artists such as Paul Marioni taught at the experimental-minded school, as did Flora C. Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick, who were Pilchuck’s first women instructors. Hank Murta Adams was a student there, as was Preston Singletary, the artist behind Raven and the Box of Daylight in the adjoining galleries.
Through the adventurous and playful work of the Pilchuck artists and others such as Karen LaMonte, who lives and works in one of the world’s glass hotspots, the Czech Republic, we encounter a novel variety of figural sculptures that make use of the molten medium’s unique properties.
