PRESS RELEASE: OKC recognizes Fair Housing Month

The City of OKC sends this information as posted below:

April marks the 57th anniversary of the passage of the Federal Fair Housing Act. It was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on April 11, 1968.

The Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to discriminate in the sale, rental, financing and advertising of housing based on race, religion, sex, disability or ethnicity. Read the Fair Housing Act.

“Fair housing plays an important role in protecting our residents from discrimination by ensuring everyone in our community has access to the opportunity to live in a thriving neighborhood,” Principal Planner for Housing and Community Development Ben Davis said. “Discriminatory housing practices can negatively impact who has access to quality education, health care, security, opportunity and wealth. Our HUD-funded partnership with Metropolitan Fair Housing Council of Oklahoma has helped protect residents from this type of discrimination, and Fair Housing principles are a core part of the work we do with the City’s housing and community development efforts.”

Tenants’ Rights Training

Oklahoma City’s Human Rights Commission hosted a tenant’s rights training class with the ACLU of Oklahoma during their March 26 meeting. During the meeting, the ACLU answered some of the most asked housing issues tenants face, including:

  • When and how can my landlord evict me?
  • Does my landlord have to allow my service animal?
  • When can my landlord raise the rent?
  • What are the legal duties of a landlord?

Watch the training here.

“We want all Oklahoma City residents to know they have a fundamental right to equal access to rental housing and homeownership,” Special Program Coordinator Emma Winiski said. “Housing discrimination is not only illegal, but it also undermines the fabric of our community and challenges our shared values of fairness and opportunity.”

The Oklahoma Attorney General’s Office is the state agency empowered to enforce the Oklahoma Fair Housing Law. To file a complaint under the State Fair Housing law, call (405) 521-2029 or email orec.help@orec.ok.gov.
