The community is invited to a celebration to mark the opening of three completed phases of the new Deep Fork Trail in Oklahoma City.
The ribbon cutting will be 10 a.m. Thursday, April 10, at Zach D. Taylor Park, 633 NW 52nd St.
“The trail winds through the Deep Fork River and is a unique wooded trail experience, unlike any other trail in Oklahoma City,” OKC Parks Director Melinda McMillian-Miller said. “The Deep Fork Trail is an important connector in the overall city multipurpose trail system providing the completed link to the inner-city loop. The addition of this trail will complete almost 100 miles of off-road trails for residents to use for cycling, running and outdoor recreation.”
The Deep Fork Trail is being completed in five construction phases. It will ultimately connect the Katy Trail to the east and continue along the Deep Fork River to the Grand Boulevard Trail to the west. Three phases are complete, totaling about 2.9 miles. The $14 million multipurpose trail was funded through the Better Streets, Safer City general obligation bond package.
The final two phases of Deep Fork Trail are still in planning and design.
About Better Streets, Safer City
In 2017, Oklahoma City voters approved a 13-proposition bond package, and two sales tax initiatives called Better Streets, Safer City. The 10-year, $967 million bond package invests in streets, police and fire facilities, parks and other basic needs. A permanent ¼ center sales tax is helping hire 129 more police officers and 57 more firefighters with an annual $26 million boost for public safety and other day-to-day operations. A temporary penny sales tax extension included in the project generated an additional $240 million for street resurfacing, streetscapes, trails, sidewalks and bicycle infrastructure.
