NORMAN, Okla. – In June and July this summer, the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History is calling all teens from across the OKC Metro who have a passion for nature, culture, and learning to participate in its seven-week Teen Volunteer Program. Open to students aged 13 to 17, this unique, hands-on experience offers an opportunity to explore Oklahoma’s natural and cultural history while gaining practical work experience, hands-on training, and the opportunity to network with faculty and staff at the University of Oklahoma. The teen volunteer program requires a 6 to 10 hour-per-week commitment.
“This program is more than just an opportunity to volunteer—it’s a chance for teens to connect with their state’s museum of natural history, experience a holistic view of museum careers, work alongside experts and ignite their curiosity for the natural and cultural world,” said Laura Vaughn, head of education and community engagement at the Sam Noble Museum.
This free program provides a variety of volunteer opportunities designed to give participants an insider’s perspective on museum operations. Teens can delve into the museum’s collections, learn and share fascinating stories about Oklahoma’s heritage with the visiting public, and develop valuable skills in a professional setting.
“I am so excited to be bringing back this program after a five-year hiatus,” says Scatlett Patiño, volunteer coordinator at the Sam Noble Museum. “The two-month structure allows us to do unique things like prepare museum specimens, spend an evening in the museum after-hours, meet scientists, and visit another institution. I cannot wait to share this experience will the participants!”
The seven-week program will conclude with a celebratory showcase, where participants will present what they have learned to their family and friends.
Applications for the Teen Volunteer Program are now open, and close on April 25. For more information or to apply, visit the museum’s events calendar at samnoblemuseum.ou.edu or call (405) 325-7977.
