PRESS RELEASE: OKC Animal Shelter introduces new intake policy to manage overpopulation

Oklahoma City Animal Welfare sends this information as posted below:

The Oklahoma City Animal Shelter is implementing a revised intake policy effective immediately to address the challenges of pet overpopulation in our community.

Starting at 9 a.m. Tuesday, the Shelter will limit daily intake to 30 dogs and 30 cats. This adjustment, maintaining the current limit on dog intake and introducing a new limit for cats, aims to proactively manage overcrowding and reduce the need for euthanasia due to space limitations.

“We are committed to the welfare of all animals in our care,” OKC Animal Welfare Superintendent Jon Gary said. “This decision underscores our dedication to finding sustainable solutions and maintaining high standards of care.”

Animals will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis with no appointments necessary. Once the daily limit is reached, signage will be placed on the front doors, indicating intake capacity has been met for the day.

In addition to these changes, the community is encouraged to assist in alleviating the strain on Shelter resources:

  • Rehome Pets Responsibly: Prioritize rehoming pets within your network of family and friends before considering surrendering them to the Shelter.
  • Provide Temporary Shelter: If you find a lost pet, consider providing temporary shelter while attempting to locate its owners. Promptly report found pets at okc.gov/animalwelfare.
  • Reserve Shelter for Those in Need: Ensure Shelter resources are reserved for animals in immediate need of care.

This intake policy remains in effect until further notice. For updates, visit okc.gov/AnimalWelfare.

The Oklahoma City Animal Shelter encourages community members to consider adoption as the best way to support pets in need. Visit the shelter at 2811 SE 29th St., Tuesday through Saturday, from noon to 5 p.m., to meet adoptable pets.
