PRESS RELEASE: Dedication ceremony to honor former OKC City Manager Dr. Terry Childers

Everyone is invited to a dedication to recognize former Oklahoma City Manager Dr. Terry Childers’ contributions to City government and the community.

The dedication will be held from 2–3 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at the Community Health Recreation and Wellness Center, 3748 N. Lincoln Blvd.

“Terry Childers was a transformational leader for Oklahoma City at a time when change was essential,” City Manager Craig Freeman said. “He introduced efficiencies in City government and strengthened core services, always leading with vision and dedication to the community.”

Dr. Childers’ wife, Essie, along with several family members, will be in attendance.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Community Health Recreation and Wellness Center of Oklahoma City for honoring Terry by naming a community room in recognition of his dedicated service to Oklahoma City as its first Black city manager,” Essie Childers said. “His leadership and commitment to progress left a lasting impact on our community, inspiring future generations. This tribute ensures that his legacy of excellence and service will be remembered for years to come.”

About Dr. Terry Childers
On September 15, 1986, Dr. Terry Childers became the first African American city manager in Oklahoma City history. At 34 years old, he was one of the youngest city managers in the country. He oversaw 3,800 employees and a $210 million operating budget.

From the moment he stepped into City Hall, Childers started making a difference. He prioritized beautifying OKC to improve residents’ quality of life and increase their respect for their hometown. He worked diligently to enhance the city’s streets, water infrastructure and sewer systems.

Childers graduated from Abilene Christian University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1974 and received a Master of Arts degree in Public Administration from North Texas State University. In December 2015, Terry received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Abilene Christian University for distinction in public and governmental service and contributions to the University and society.

Dr. Childers passed away in his hometown of Abilene, Texas, at 68 on Dec. 8, 2021.
