PRESS RELEASE: deadCenter Film Festival announces select documentaries, including BISMACK from OKCThunder Films

OKLAHOMA CITY (April 25, 2024) – deadCenter Film unveils another inspiring selection of documentary features to screen at its 24th annual festival as well select documentary shorts from Oklahoma filmmakers including ‘BISMACK,’ the latest from OKCThunder Films. The films announced today serve much of the documentary features category and preview what’s to come across the range of forthcoming short film categories, specifically those documentaries with Oklahoma ties.

Joining La Singla and Saucedo in the documentary feature program are: 

Citizen Sleuth by filmmaker Chris Kasick of Ohio, chronicling a true crime podcaster from Appalachia who blurs the line between fact and entertainment as she navigates the mysterious death of a local girl, exploring how the power of narrative affects truth, victims and communities; 

Hail to the Breadsticks! by Emmy-winning writer and producer Donick Cary, a huge fan of the Washington D.C. pro football team since before he could walk, who embarks on a cross-country journey full of unexpected surprises after his 9-year old son asked him if the name and/or Native American logo was racist; 

and lastly, with Oklahoma ties, from Executive Producer Jesse Eisenberg and returning deadCenter filmmaker Jeremy Workman, is Secret Mall Apartment following eight young Rhode Islanders who in 2003 created a secret apartment complete with furnishings and a locked door in a hidden space inside the Providence Place Mall to make a statement against gentrification, filming everything along the way over four years. The film also features the group’s charitable efforts, volunteering at local children’s hospitals or creating massive memorial art pieces for victims of 9/11 and the Oklahoma City Bombing.

Leading the Oklahoma filmmaker short film lineup are:

BISMACK, the latest release from OKCThunder Films, which winds viewers through the challenges, conflicts, and triumphs of Oklahoma City Thunder center Bismack Biyombo.

Built Different is by filmmaker Michael Zubach, following South Oklahoma City gym Rival Boxing and coaches Nikki Burleson and Juwan Cubit with the unique approach and coaching style that has produced four National Champions, six Runner Ups and four Bronze medals; 

Distant Thunder by returning deadCenter filmmaker and former deadCenter Executive Director Lance McDaniel celebrates the Native American written and produced musical that first came to life at the First Americans Museum in collaboration with Lyric Theatre;

and Bunee Tomlinson returns to deadCenter with Endeavor, following a group of adaptive athletes as they prepare for the annual Endeavor Games in Oklahoma, all while they adjust to life-altering situations, come to terms with their mental health and pursue Paralympian status;  

On May 1 deadCenter programmers will present a Festival Preview at Rodeo Cinema Stockyards at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m., exploring themes across this year’s slate and offering tips on how to navigate the festival.

Last week, deadCenter announced music videos, series/episodics and experimental selections for 2024. Music videos from Oklahoma musicians include Chaos Candy by Stepmom, Hey Highway by Kaitlyn Killian, Nasupeti by Olivia Komacheet, Push Our Luck by Darci Lynne, Strangest Hill by The Bourgeois, Too Much by Branjae and What I Do by JMASTY.

The 24th Annual deadCenter Film Festival will take place June 6-9. Additional film selections and programming highlights will be released weekly until the festival begins. Passes are currently on sale for $200 at deadcenterfilm.org.
