PRESS RELEASE: City leaders make progress on MAPS 4 sidewalks

The City of Oklahoma City sends this information as posted below:

Construction on the first two phases of MAPS 4 sidewalks is underway citywide, continuing the momentum toward making Oklahoma City more walkable and safer for pedestrians.

Over the next year, the MAPS 4 penny will be used to build more than 35 sidewalks, with more planned through 2031. In all, the City is investing $61 million in sidewalks through MAPS 4.

The new sidewalks will feature modernized pedestrian crossings and ensure ADA compliance, offering enhanced access to schools, parks and medical centers.

“Through MAPS initiatives and bond issues over the last two decades, we have reprioritized the pedestrian experience in OKC, which improves our City’s quality of life and our individual health,” Mayor David Holt said. “This willingness to invest in ourselves is allowing us to slowly change the way we interact with our City and provide options beyond just the automobile. And thanks to planning processes like the bikewalkokc master plan, we ensure that investments are made in the highest priority locations.”

The sidewalk locations were selected based on recommendations in the Planning Department’s bikewalkokc master plan. They were prioritized because they connect neighborhoods to shopping, schools, bus stops, medical centers, senior centers, parks and libraries

“With MAPS 4, we are reshaping the future of our neighborhoods by providing critical infrastructure and investing in the quality of life for residents,” MAPS Program Manager David Todd said. “Oklahoma City is becoming a more walkable city, and these new sidewalks will improve accessibility and provide safe connections for pedestrians across the city.”

About MAPS 4

MAPS 4 is a debt-free public improvement program funded by a temporary penny sales tax that will raise a projected $1.07 billion over eight years. Oklahoma City voters approved the sales tax to fund MAPS 4 in a special election on Dec. 10, 2019, moving forward with a unique and ambitious plan to transform our community. The temporary penny sales tax funding MAPS 4 began April 1, 2020, and ends in 2028. More than 70 percent of MAPS 4 funding is dedicated to neighborhood and human needs. The rest is for quality of life and job-creating initiatives. The MAPS 4 Citizens Advisory Board and its six subcommittees will guide MAPS 4 planning and implementation, making recommendations to the City Council. The Council has final authority on MAPS 4. The MAPS Investment and Operating Trust developed a strategic investment plan to support long-term sustainable funding for MAPS 4 projects’ operational expenses and maintenance.
