Oklahoma City, OK (August 2024) – The Latino Community Development Agency (LCDA) is pleased to announce a generous grant of $80,000 from Bank of America. This significant contribution helps LCDA reinstitute free health and wellness workshops for families.

A check presentation is scheduled to take place at the beginning of the next LCDA board meeting on Tuesday, August 20th, at 4:00 p.m, 420 SW 10th St.

The Familias Saludables Program aims to achieve significant health improvements such as increased awareness of nutritional and physical activity’s health benefits, improved dietary habits, and increased physical activity among participants.

Program Overview:

Familias Saludables will provide six comprehensive health and wellness classes for families, each consisting of up to ten families with children, infants and teens. These classes will be held weekly and led by Certified Health Promoters. The program will educate participants on the importance of balanced nutrition and physical activity to reduce obesity and related health issues.

Program Goals:

  • Eliminate health disparities and improve the overall health of Latino families at risk for hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.
  • Improve access to affordable, healthful food options.
  • Educate about the importance of healthy foods and physical activity.
  • Encourage lifelong healthy attitudes and behaviors.
  • Facilitate access to health and wellness resources through strong community partnerships.

Recruitment and Participation:

Families will be recruited from LCDA’s existing programs, Oklahoma City Public Schools, and early childhood development centers. High-risk families suffering from obesity and related diseases will be prioritized. Each family will receive a Familias Saludables program kit, including t-shirts, resistance bands, measuring cups, food journals, stress balls, tote bags, and educational materials.

“We are excited to re-launch the Familias Saludables Program and positively impact the health and well-being of Latino families in Oklahoma City,” said Dr. Yuliana Reyes. “Thanks to this grant, we will better address cultural and language barriers, providing essential health education and resources, fostering lifelong healthier lifestyles.”

“We share LCDA’s focus on making lives better, as it works to provide essential wellness

services to the local community,” said Tony Shinn, president, Bank of America Oklahoma

City. “Bank of America works with nonprofits addressing barriers to prosperity such as

health issues, which can keep people from focusing on financial wellness.”

Salvador Ontiveros will be available for interviews or photo opportunities at the Latino Community Development Agency, 420 SW 10th, August 20th from 3:30 – 4:00pm.
