PRESS RELEASE: ACOG seeks input on transportation safety plan in Central Oklahoma

The Association of Central Oklahoma Governments (ACOG) sends this information as posted below:

The Association of Central Oklahoma Governments (ACOG) invites those who live or work in Central Oklahoma, including Canadian, Cleveland, Logan and Oklahoma counties, and portions of McClain and Grady counties, to provide input on transportation safety through an online survey. Survey results will inform the ACOG Regional Safety Action Plan.

In Central Oklahoma, crashes increased 21 percent from 2020 to 2021 with over 21,000 crashes. The ACOG Regional Safety Action Plan, based on ACOG analysis and input from Central Oklahomans, will include a holistic strategy to reduce or eliminate roadway fatalities and serious injuries. Survey results will influence and confirm the safety recommendations for Central Oklahoma as ACOG develops a plan for improvements.

“All people deserve safe, reliable travel within our region,” John M. Sharp, ACOG Deputy Director, said. “As we develop a plan for improvements, input from our residents is paramount to providing a comprehensive plan that reduces, and hopefully eliminates, serious injuries and fatalities on the road. Cultivating a culture of safety on our roadways is a key to protect our guests and residents as they commute to work and home, travel, and enjoy activities in Central Oklahoma.”

The survey will allow residents and guests to share their experiences and concerns with current modes of transportation – including those who travel by car, foot traffic, ride share, bicycling and public transportation – as part of several public engagement initiatives to help identify high-risk locations.

Residents are also invited to share their input at an upcoming pop-up event on Saturday, May 11 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Norman Farm Market (210 James Garner Ave, Norman, OK 73069).

The ACOG service area consists of over 40 cities and 6 counties in Central Oklahoma. The plan will analyze safety needs within these counties and identify high-risk locations and factors contributing to crashes, prioritize strategies to address them, and serve as a guide for future implementation of the improvements and funding requests.

ACOG received federal grant funding to develop a plan as a part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s bipartisan Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. The ACOG Regional Safety Action Plan is projected to be completed by the end of this year.
