OKLAHOMA CITY — An hour-long standoff between police and one man with a gun in SE OKC Friday ended when police shot and killed the man.
This marks the 5th police shooting of the year and homicide 55 for the Oklahoma City Police Department. The department terms these shootings “officer-involved shootings.”
The man killed was:
- Brandon Lena, 47
According to Capt. Valerie Littlejohn with OKCPD, at 3:10 AM patrol officers were dispatched to 7021 Eagles Landing in SE OKC near I-240 and S. Sooner Road on reports of “a suicidal man in the street, armed with a gun.”
“The armed man had reportedly made threats of dying via suicide by cop,” said Littlejohn in a press release.
When officers arrived they found Lena in the street holding a pistol. For the next hour, the officers tried to de-escalate the situation and get Lena to lay down the gun, but he did not, according to Capt. Littlejohn.
Also, officers attempted to use “less than lethal” projectiles fired at the man to get him to lay down the pistol and surrender but those measures did not work to that point.
“Mr. Lena pointed his gun at officers and was fatally shot,” according to Littlejohn. The department reports no other injuries.
Three officers fired at Lena when he raised his pistol at police.
Those officers are on routine administrative leave pending a full investigation of the shooting.
The officers are:
- Officer James Doran – Four years of service.
- Officer Joshua Geerdes – Four years of service.
- Officer Jimmy Hatfield – Four years of service.
Attempts to contact Littlejohn by phone Monday were unsuccessful. We will update this report later if we obtain any new, reliable information.
