OK County Jail detainee dead; little info released as investigation begins

OKLAHOMA CITY – An Oklahoma County Detention Center detainee died Tuesday night in an area hospital, but jail staff are currently not elaborating on details or cause of death as they say an investigation is already ongoing.

It is the jail’s third detainee death this year.

Found unresponsive; few other details

At around 6:50pm Tuesday night, jail staff say they discovered 33-year-old Dancing Feathers Whitecrow unresponsive, at which time they attempted lifesaving measures before transporting Whitecrow by ambulance to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

An investigation into the death is now underway, led by the Oklahoma County Criminal Investigations Division (CID) per jail protocol.

Information released Tuesday night did not specify if Whitecrow was found unresponsive in a cell or in a common area, nor did it provide any insight into circumstances or events prior to her being found unresponsive.

Whitecrow was taken into custody by Oklahoma City police on April 25th and was awaiting trial at the jail for burglary and drug charges.

Recent reductions in staff, information

The year’s third detainee death at the Oklahoma County Detention Center is also the third death since the adoption of a new media policy for the jail that makes less information available while investigations are taking place.

Per the new policy, only the deceased’s name and date of death will be released with “additional details provided if and when appropriate” at the jail’s discretion.

The new policy was announced in February alongside the announcement of a detainee’s death from more than a week before.

Whitecrow’s death also comes after a dramatic reduction in staff after the Oklahoma County Criminal Justice Authority – known as the Jail Trust – was forced to cancel a major staffing contract amid an ongoing funding crisis, as reported in April by The Frontier:

That reduction in staff was expected to result in significantly fewer safety and security checks for detainees at the jail.

The death of Dancing Feathers Whitecrow joins those of Jeremiah Coffey and Sheila Prince in 2026.

The Oklahoma County Detention Center has yet to release a cause of death for any of them.

Note: Charges, information, or claims made by law enforcement have not yet been tested in court. Under the law, all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty before a jury of their peers or a plea of guilt.
