OK County Jail begins cell repairs, painting in ‘ongoing project’

OKLAHOMA CITY — One pod on the fourth floor of the Oklahoma County Detention Center is undergoing cell repairs to catch up on much-needed maintenance and sanitization.

According to spokesperson Mark Opgrande, cells in the pod are undergoing the following repairs and upgrades:

  • Dirt and grime removed from walls
  • Repairs done to cells including holes in the walls
  • Concrete walls sealed
  • Concrete walls painted to fill pores where bedbugs can hide
  • Paint is a bright color and reflects light better than bare concrete

“These efforts will improve the quality of life for our detainees by providing a brighter, cleaner living environment,” said Brandi Garner, CEO of the Oklahoma County Detention Center. “The expectation is better mental health versus being housed in a dark, dungeon-like cell. This is what right looks like.”

Officials say that through “recent efforts to manage the population correctly” they have been able to clear the whole pod to allow them to do work there.

According to jail officials, the renovation project is “ongoing.”
