Fire claims apartment, damages others in NW OKC complex

-- No injuries are reported

OKLAHOMA CITY — A fire that broke out in the second-story of one apartment building in the 6400 block of W. Wilshire Road eventually spread throughout the attic before fire crews arrived Wednesday afternoon.

Two families were being assisted by the Oklahoma City Fire Department’s Community Service Officer in finding another place in the complex or elsewhere, if necessary, coordinating with the Red Cross.

Fire investigators began their inspection of the fire-damaged building as soon as the fire was out. The cause of the fire has not been determined yet as of publication.

“We’re not sure how the fire started except that it did start in the middle of the [building] on the second floor,” OKC Fire Department PIO Chief Scott Douglass told Free Press at the scene. “It quickly grew to the attic, and that’s where it kind of It grew out laterally. So this whole building has fire all the way across from end to end in the building.”

Douglass said that the fire was contained to one apartment but there is fire damage across the attic as well as smoke throughout the building.

Daylight streamed through a hole in the roof where fire burned completely through over the apartment where there were flames.

It was a commercial fire alarm with a total of 14 “units” which includes ladder/rescue trucks, engines, a water tanker, and chiefs according to Douglass.
