Celebrate all the season has to offer with OKC Dec events

OKLAHOMA CITY — It feels like there’s no month on the calendar packed fuller of events and happenings in Oklahoma City than December.

In between the gift shopping, company parties, school plays, and seemingly ever-growing to-do lists, OKC residents have a wealth of opportunities to get out on the town and blow off some steam while supporting local businesses, artists, performers, and even the city itself.

So whether you’re looking for some family-friendly fun and games, a festive outlet for your own creativity, or you’re just in need of a night of uncontrollable laughter, we’ve got you covered.

Oklahoma Contemporary: Snow Glow – Saturday, December 9th

On the second Saturday of every month, the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center welcomes families and burgeoning artists alike to enjoy a free day of special workshops, activities, and performances, all on top of the always-free curated art galleries.

But for December, the Saturday celebration is going all-out for the Snow Glow, a fully winter-themed immersion into the artistic possibilities of the season with everything from holiday card-making to hot chocolate to a life-sized snow globe to every kid’s true winter dream: an indoor snowball fight.

LIVE! on the Plaza: Holiday Block Party – OKC Plaza District – Sunday, December 10th

The Plaza District’s monthly LIVE! series returns for December, but this time it’s all about celebrating the season and encouraging a family day out.

While the LIVE! on the Plaza series usually takes place on the second Friday evening of each month, this month’s Holiday Block Party is set to be an all-day Sunday affair, with ornament-making, artist pop-ups, games, music, and even a “cocoa crawl” with free hot chocolate all over The Plaza.

And then when you’re finished hitting all the shops, stalls, and activities, you’ll be right next to Lyric Theatre for their can’t-miss production of “A Christmas Carol” that’s already been filling seats all month.

OKC Parks presents: A Dickens Christmas – Will Rogers Gardens – Friday, December 15th & Saturday, December 16th

There’s just something about that Victorian Era, Dickensian aesthetic of Old London that just feels like Christmastime. Maybe it’s the air of long nights, roaring fires, and gratitude for a rich, meat-filled meal. Or maybe it’s just because “A Christmas Carol” has become such an indelible staple of the season.

Either way, OKC Parks & Recreation has partnered with Northwest Optimist Performing Artists to bring a sampling of Dickens’ works to the stage and a sampling of that classic, hearty food to your stomachs when they present “A Dickens Christmas” at the gardens at Will Rogers Park.

The program will have bits of “Carol” sprinkled in among some other Dickens favorites, while the menu boats beef wellington, traditional bread pudding, and of course roasted chestnuts.

Comedy Bizarro: A Holiday Show – Factory Obscura – Saturday, December 16th

If you’re in need of a break from the inevitable stress and grind of the holiday season, then there’s likely to be no better respite than the Comedy Bizarro Holiday Show at Factory Obscura’s recently booming space on 9th Street.

And when they say “holiday show,” they mean it.

Not content with simply focusing their comedic chops on the standard winter holidays, host Caleb Collins and the night’s remarkable slate of comedians have set their sights on holidays, rituals, traditions, and days of honor from all throughout the year.

Featuring a lineup of some of the scene’s very best and most creatively hysterical names, such as James Ngheim, Tyler Bee Spears, Nataly Perez, Alex Sanchez, Meredith  Everitt, Wampus Reynolds, and more, they’ll each be aiming at a different holiday with stories and stand-up that’ll have you rolling.

Drop-In Art: Holiday Frames & Photos with Santa – Oklahoma City Museum of Art – Saturday, December 23rd

If you’ve got small kids and you celebrate the Christmas holiday, then odds are good that you’ll be making sure they get that all-important December meet-and-greet with the big man in red, and what better environment for that than one that encourages their own imaginations to run wild?

OKCMOA
Holiday Frames at OKCMOA 2023

As part of OKCMOA’s Saturday morning Art Drop-In series, where they encourage families to engage in some come-and-go art-making activities and creative fun, they’ll be guiding children (of all ages) through making and decorating their own holiday-themed picture frame, perfect for displaying the shots they’ll be taking alongside Mr. Claus.
