Be thankful for these OKC restaurants open on Thanksgiving Day

-- Thanksgiving 2023

Here we arrive once more at the hearty, homestyle food-lover’s most celebrated day on the calendar: Thanksgiving.

It’s the day when the food seems to never end and the family seems to never leave, all in the spirit of giving thanks and appreciation for the very best and most important things in life, namely food and family.

Well, we at Free Press can’t be of much help for the uncomfortable conversations and awkward kitchen confrontations with family members, but if you want a little help with the food part, we can oblige.

While Turkey Day has long been the cooking-est day of the year, it’s become increasingly trendy to forgo the home kitchen completely and spend the day enjoying some higher-level takes on the holiday classics from some of the city’s best culinary forces or ignoring the turkey altogether for something different.

So if you’re looking to get out of the kitchen and out of the house this year, here’s a list of city spots from across styles, flavors, and prices that’ll make you thankful for OKC’s remarkable restaurant community.

FLINT – 15 N. Robinson Ave. – 10:00 am – 9:00 pm

Inside the Colcord Hotel downtown is one of the city’s best destinations for some straightforward, homestyle American dishes of the highest quality and the most upscale presentation.

They’ll be offering a special Thanksgiving menu all day and evening, featuring the required turkey and gravy, but also options of prime rib, herb-crusted lamb, and likely the nicest sweet potato casserole with toasted marshmallows that you’ve ever laid taste buds on.

If you’re taking the whole family out for the holiday and trying desperately to impress your in-laws, this is the place for you.

Piatto Italian Kitchen – 2920 NW 63rd St. – 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

If you’re the kind that prefers a big Thanksgiving lunch so that you can spend the rest of the day napping it off, then look no further than Piatto’s unique, mouthwatering Thanksgiving Day lunch buffet.

Of course, they’ll be offering turkey, corn, and green beans, but it wouldn’t be an Italian feast without pasta marinara and chicken alfredo.

And you can’t beat Piatto’s dessert selection all laid out buffet style in front of you.

Grand House – 2701 N. Classen – 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Maybe you’re looking for a light early lunch before a mammoth evening meal, or maybe you’re wanting to fill up on something different from turkey and stuffing early and then spend the rest of the day just watching movies, sports, or your relatives embarrassing themselves.

Either way, Grand House will have exactly what you need when they offer their daily Dim Sum service with extended hours on Thanksgiving Day.

It’s a city-favorite brunch tradition for a reason, so even if you plan on just eating light for the afternoon, you should probably expect to head home full.

Bricktown Brewery at Remington Park – 1 Remington Pl. 11:00 am – 7:00 pm

Looking for a nice, big, casual buffet where you can take some kids and grandparents for all the traditional holiday fare, but also where you’ll be able to secretly be paying closer attention to the football on TV all day?

Sounds like what you need is the Thanksgiving Day buffet at Bricktown Brewery’s satellite location inside Remington Park, where they’ll be laying out a full spread of all the holiday staples.

And of course, plenty of that most important element of any major American family holiday:

Beer.

Mary Eddy’s – 900 W. Main St. – 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm

One of the finest OKC eating establishments offering one of the finest Thanksgiving meals you’ll find anywhere in town, Mary Eddy’s is serving up a three-course, “prix fixe” menu to celebrate the holiday in characteristically gorgeous, delectable fashion.

Deviled eggs and harvest salad compete for your starter course option against a butternut squash soup with goat cheese and sage oil, which is already delicious as just a combination of words.

Entrees include short rib, seared salmon, and of course Mary’s Turkey Plate, a full traditional offering of bird, mash, greens, carrots, stuffing, gravy, and the integral cranberry sauce.

For dessert, you’ll choose from the staple pecan pie, a caramel-apple ice cream “fluff,” and a beautifully over-the-top pumpkin chai ice cream sandwich.

But of course, it wouldn’t be Mary Eddy’s without a fantastic wine selection, and they’ve paired their curated suggestions to each and every item on the menu.

Unsurprisingly, reservations for this one are filling up head-spinningly fast.

Denny’s – Everywhere – Always Open

Last year, we told you about the International House of Pancakes and all it has to offer each Thanksgiving.

Well, if that blew your mind, then allow us to present Denny’s and their mythical Grand Slam breakfast.

Look, the truth is that not everyone has family or an upscale, reservation-friendly budget for the holiday, and that’s okay, too.

Because everyone has Denny’s. They’re always there when you need them, and come the holiday this Thursday, there will be a lot of people who need them once again.

But no matter where you eat, always remember: If you have a server, tip them exceptionally well. They’re giving up part of their own holiday to make yours even better.
