PRESS RELEASE: Work begins on May Avenue bridge over NW Expressway

The City of OKC sends this information as posted below:

The City of Oklahoma City, in partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, will begin construction on Tuesday, May 26, to replace the May Avenue bridge over Northwest Expressway.

Beginning May 26, the northbound May Avenue ramp will close, and the southbound May Avenue ramp will intermittently close, as needed, to allow crews to safely complete construction operations.

Construction will occur in multiple stages throughout the project, with periodic traffic shifts to allow for bridge demolition and reconstruction, roadway improvements and final finishing work. Drivers should expect temporary lane closures, narrowed lanes and changing traffic patterns on both NW Expressway and May Avenue during construction. At certain phases, traffic will be routed onto temporary detour lanes while crews complete paving, drainage and other improvements.

Construction timelines and traffic impacts will be posted on vision.okc.gov as work progresses. Motorists are encouraged to stay alert for updates and plan for possible delays in the area.

As part of the two-year project, crews will remove the existing May Avenue bridge and construct a new diverging diamond interchange. The redesigned interchange will improve traffic flow, enhance safety and increase mobility for drivers traveling through the area.

In addition to the new bridge, the project will include updated ramps, traffic signals, street lighting and aesthetic enhancements to improve the corridor.

The $15 million project is funded through a combination of an Association of Central Oklahoma Governments grant, the City’s 2017 bond program and Street Development Fees.
