OKLAHOMA CITY — Once again, there will only be one “Brett” at work in Oklahoma City Free Press LLC, although a different one.
Brett Fieldcamp, previously the entertainment editor, takes the reins of the nearly 10-year-old online daily metro news publication becoming it’s new owner and editor in chief.
Brett Dickerson, editor in chief and the company’s founder, sold his complete interest in the publication to Fieldcamp, with both inking the deal on Monday.
“Oklahoma City Free Press has become my home over these past years, and having the chance to take the reins was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up,” wrote Fieldcamp after the transfer.
“But it’s also an immense responsibility to ensure that our work continues to reflect the full community, culture, and life of this city, especially at a time of historic growth and evolution for OKC,” he continued.
“It’s been an honor to become a part of the story of this city, and I look forward to continuing that story alongside some of the best writers and reporters in Oklahoma.”
Dickerson glad to see Free Press in good hands
“After nearly ten years, it’s great to hand off Free Press to such a capable talent and leader as Brett Fieldcamp,” said Dickerson after the signing.
“Brett has grown in his understanding of what it takes to run a local news publication, and will be an excellent leader to our dedicated freelance reporters who, on a regular basis, go far beyond just their contract,” Dickerson said.
Dickerson founded Free Press in November of 2016 and has been at the helm the entire time.
For the first two years, it was just him doing the writing, editing, photography, and website development, until putting the publication on hiatus in August of 2018.
Then, in winter of 2019, at the strong encouragement of PR pro Lennon Patton and others, Dickerson re-activated the publication with a “We’re back!” party organized by Patton and attended by some of the publication’s strongest supporters.
From there Dickerson reached out and started recruting capable reporters to join him in the effort eventually running a steady crew of 4 to 6 freelance reporters who added much talent and energy to the publication’s reporting of life in Oklahoma City.
“I can’t tell you what a blast it’s been getting to edit and work with such talented reporters!” said Dickerson. “They have been everything to this publication.”
Among those was Brett Fieldcamp, a well-known and respected entertainment reporter.
Over the last several years Fieldcamp has written entertainment news and has founded two columns: One for all things film sponsored by Oklahoma City Museum of Art; and, the other, a music column sponsored by True Sky Credit Union.
Both organizations have been loyal and meaningful marketing partners over the years.
A little over a year ago, Dickerson had attorneys rework the company’s operating agreement to include Fieldcamp as a partner and named him the entertainment editor.
With the sale, Fieldcamp now has 100% of the shares of the company.
