By highlighting Black stories and lived experiences, the Metropolitan Library System creates space for learning, conversation and connection. Throughout February, Metro Libraries will host programs celebrating Black history, culture and community for all ages.
African American Experiences
- Feb. 7, 11 a.m. at Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library
- Retired Metropolitan Library System librarian Phillip Tolbert presents an overview of African American contributions across medicine, science, literature, music, sports and more.
Celebrating Ralph Ellison: More Than Invisible
- Feb. 21, 2 p.m. at Ralph Ellison Library
- Feb. 27, 10 a.m. at Edmond Library
- Feb. 28, 2 p.m. at Patience S. Latting Northwest Library
- Families are invited to celebrate the life and legacy of Oklahoma City literary icon Ralph Ellison through a series of programs inspired by the children’s book “Ralph Ellison: More Than Invisible,” by award-winning author Quraysh Ali Lansana. An Oklahoma native, Lansana has written more than 20 books and directs the African American Studies program at the University of Tulsa.
Before Greensboro: Why the 1958 Katz Sit-In Matters Nationally
- Feb. 21, 2 p.m. at Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library
- Historian and author Dr. Karlos Hill will present a discussion placing Oklahoma City at the center of the modern sit-in movement. Drawing on firsthand accounts from the 13 Katz Drug Store sit-in participants, Hill explores how their actions helped desegregate 38 stores and influence the national civil rights movement. A book signing will follow, with copies available through Second Story Books.
Oklahoma Black Communities Symposium
- Feb. 28, noon–5 p.m. at Ronald J. Norick Downtown Library
- This symposium brings together individuals and organizations working to research, document and preserve Black communities across Oklahoma. The keynote address, “From Tulsa to Beyond: African American Genealogy in Oklahoma,” will be presented by professional genealogist Nicka Sewell-Smith and will highlight Oklahoma-specific resources for uncovering family histories.

- After School Art Hour: Celebrating Black History Month – Feb. 17, 4:30 p.m., Midwest City Library
- Culture Crew: Black History Month (all ages) – Feb. 18, 6:30 p.m., Del City Library
