OKLAHOMA CITY — Science Museum Oklahoma is welcoming two new exhibitions that showcase the vibrant intersections of science, art, and imagination. Opening October 3 in the museum’s smART Space galleries, Field Notes: How Mammals Sense Their World invites guests to experience life through the eyes, ears, and noses of animals. At the same time, the museum is featuring Animation Academy, a limited-time exhibition celebrating the craft and creativity of animated storytelling.
Field Notes: How Mammals Sense Their World draws on the scientific concept of umwelt, the unique way each species perceives its surroundings. Through original artwork, interactive animations, scent-based storytelling, authentic specimens, and animal enrichment tools, the exhibition reveals how mammals navigate and understand their environment. Created in collaboration with students from the University of Oklahoma School of Visual Art, the Sam Noble Museum, and the Oklahoma City Zoo, Field Notes combines artistic expression with scientific research to foster empathy and understanding across species.
The exhibition will remain in the smART Space galleries for one year and takes the place of the popular Out of the Toybox: The Toy Photography of Mitchel Wu.
“Consistently adding new experiences at Science Museum Oklahoma is central to our mission of curating wonder,” said Sherry Marshall, president and CEO of Science Museum Oklahoma. “Our guests know that each visit brings something new to see, do, and learn. Exhibitions like Field Notes and Animation Academy ensure that creativity and curiosity stay alive for visitors of every age.”
Alongside Field Notes, guests can enjoy Animation Academy, open now through January. This engaging exhibition explores the world of animation, from hand-drawn classics to CGI marvels. Guests will encounter familiar characters spanning generations while discovering the artistic and technical processes that bring them to life. Hands-on activities throughout the gallery allow visitors to try their hand at the craft of animation.
Both of the new exhibitions are included with general admission.
