Protect your pets in freezing weather; doghouse donations needed

Oklahoma City Animal Welfare sends this information as posted below:

Dog owners are reminded to protect their dogs from the elements when the temperature dips below 32 degrees.

When left alone in freezing weather for more than 30 minutes, many dog breeds will become frostbitten and could even freeze to death. If a dog dies after being exposed to extreme weather, the dog’s owner can be charged with a felony.

A dog is considered outside if it has an unheated doghouse or other unheated structure. The structure should have a safe heat source. Vehicles are not considered adequate shelter.

“We need to protect these pets before their lives are in jeopardy,” OKC Animal Welfare Superintendent Jon Gary said. “This is just another step in ensuring we maintain a humane community where animals are valued and protected. Our goal is to work with pet owners to keep their pets safe.”

Doghouse donations needed

Animal Welfare is requesting donations of new or used doghouses. The public can also ship doghouses like this one directly to the Shelter at 2811 SE 29th St.

The houses will be offered to dog owners who don’t have the resources to purchase a home for their dogs.

OKC Animal Welfare is open for adoptions from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday but holidays. For more information, visit okc.gov/animalwelfare or call (405) 297-3100.
