PRESS RELEASE: Bike Club OKC burglarized, thousands raised to help

Bike Club OKC sends this information as posted below:

Cyclists and good samaritans are coming together to help Bike Club OKC after thieves got away with their equipment.  According to the GoFundMe set up to help Bike Club OKC, the criminals broke into a locker and stole bikes, pumps, maintenance equipment, and tools that are essential to keep their student bikes rolling.

At the end of each school year, every Bike Club OKC graduate receives a bike, helmet, and safety vest in order to continue with the sport. Many of our students also use cycling as a means for transportation,” the fundraiser reads.

To help the organization recover, the community has helped raise more than $5000 to support the bike club’s mission. You can find the GoFundMe link hereYou can also read more about Bike Club OKC’s mission , as well as find contact information, on their Facebook page

About Bike Club OKC

Bike Club kicks off each year in September or October and runs for approximately 20-25 weeks, finishing in early May. Each club is made up of 15-20 students and five volunteers — this number includes faculty member(s). Equipment needed to run club activities, such as bicycles, helmets, safety vests, curriculum, drill supplies, maps, etc., along with adult-size bicycles, are provided to each participating school.

The program aims to create better citizens through cycling. Students learn about safe cycling and STEM while focusing on the ABCs: Attendance, Behavior, and Coursework. Each student develops the knowledge and responsibility to take care of a bicycle; airing up tires, checking and adjusting the brakes, adjusting the chain and derailleur, changing a tire, and many other important bicycle-maintenance skills.

Students ride with “ride ambassadors” for two hours each week, which gives them the opportunity to spend time being active outdoors. They work on communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills with their peers, which has aided in their success in school. Students may ride to a fire station, museum, park, restaurant, or another nearby place of interest as they build confidence cycling on the streets of OKC.

All participants who complete the program earn a bike, a helmet, a safety vest, safety lights, a bike lock, and a bike pump, leaving the program with the tangible and intangible tools to ride with confidence.
