OKLAHOMA CITY – Presented by With Love OKC, Juneteenth on the East returns June 15 to the heart of the Eastside, at NE 23rd Street between Kelham Avenue and Hood Street, offering the 4th annual observance with a mission to bring joy, education, creativity and wellness to the community.
The full weekend of events, June 13 – 16, includes a march featuring local youth marching band, dance performances, children’s art activities, vendor fairs, local foods, a 5K fun run, a black creativity panel discussion, a Sunday brunch, and a slate of musical performances by local and internationally recognized musical artists at the centerpiece festival. All are 100% free to the public.
Juneteenth on the East is produced by With Love OKC and local community leaders, including Jabee, Oklahoma Mural Syndicate, Red Coyote Running and Fitness and the Oklahoma City Zoo. These champions of OKC hope to provide area families with an experience some could only dream of as kids. The entire city is welcome to join in this celebration of Freedom and Placemaking while highlighting the history of Emancipation in the United States. Juneteenth reminds us all that liberation is not a one-time event. Rather, it’s an ongoing process of fighting for, and gaining back, basic human dignity.

Organizers are excited to announce co-headliners for this year’s festival will be the Grammy Nominated & Dreamville Artist Bas and R&B legend Goapele. Balancing his bravado with relatable humility, Dreamville’s Bas is a global artist, performer, curator and storyteller. He’s received multiple GRAMMY® nominations and RIAA certified records as well as launching an award winning podcast (The Messenger, 2021) and curating a festival in South Africa. Of Sudanese origin, Bas (Abbas Hamad) was born in Paris and raised in Queens, New York. Kicking off 2023, Bas unveiled single “Diamonds” accompanied by a deeply introspective visual and then the J. Cole assisted track “Passport Bros” — both off his newly announced album, We Only Talk About Real Shit When We’re Fucked Up out this year.
Also Headlining will be R&B Legend Goapele She is a singer/songwriter, entrepreneur, actor, and activist who has solidified her position amongst the most prolific R&B and soulful visionaries and creators of our time. And now, Goapele is back with her sixth and most introspective album yet, COLOURS. The seven-track gem, slated for release this summer on the indie artist’s label Skyblaze Recordings, is as sensual as it is unforgettable. There is no denying that her songwriting prowess is heavily on display on this latest album, as well as her uncanny ability to create an atmospheric, mesmerizing world within her music.
Black people in the United States got a first taste of liberation on June 19, 1865, after more than 400 years of enslavement, exploitation, and denial of humanity. June 19 now marks an annual celebration – Juneteenth. Today, we celebrate the Black community’s leadership in cultural revolutions and a powerful determination to celebrate, gather, create, dance, sing, and live in abundant Joy. This joy is not reliant on physical or systemic circumstances; instead, the ability to withstand oppression with laughter and levity is locked deep within Black culture and genetic memory.
