September is a month of celebration at the Metropolitan Library System as we mark both Library Card Sign-Up Month and Hispanic Heritage Month. We invite everyone to explore the many ways your library card can enhance your life with a range of engaging events and activities for all ages.
Library Card Sign-Up Month Events
- Painting Party – Ralph Ellison Library, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m.
- Design your own Metropolitan Library System library card inspired by artist Jacob Lawrence. Registration is required.
- Enter to Win Prizes – Southern Oaks Library, Sept. 3 to 30
- Sign up for a library card or check out four or more items to enter weekly prize drawings. Attend the “Exploring Library Resources” program for extra entries and a chance for kids to win a fire engine tour.

- Borrow Books and Media: Enjoy bestsellers and classics with no overdue fines.
- Access Digital Resources: Explore eBooks, audiobooks and movies through Libby, hoopla and Kanopy.
- Use Online Learning Platforms: Improve skills with LinkedIn Learning, Mango Languages and LearningExpress Library.
- Reserve Meeting Rooms: Book spaces for meetings or work.

Hispanic Heritage Month – Sept. 15 to Oct. 15
Join us in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of events and activities that honor the rich cultural heritage of the Hispanic community:
- Paint Your Own Cantarito de Barro – Warr Acres Library, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m.
- Decorate traditional Mexican clay mugs (cantaritos) with floral designs. Each participant receives a packet of Abuelita’s Mexican Style Instant Hot Chocolate. For adults. Registration is required.
- Book Discussion: “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter” – Capitol Hill Library, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m.
- Join the BIPOC Book Club for a discussion of Erika L. Sánchez’s “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.” Light refreshments will be served. For adults. Registration is required.
- Mini Painting for Hispanic Heritage Month Kit – Southern Oaks Library, Sept. 16-30
- Take home a mini painting kit and learn about celebrated Hispanic artists. Registration is required.
- LatinX Heritage Month Celebration Take-Home Kits – Northwest Library, Sept. 29 (all day)
- Pick up a take-home kit to celebrate LatinX Heritage Month. One kit per household, per registration. Registration is required.
- Artsy Fartsy Club: Diego Rivera – Northwest Library, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m.
- Teens can learn about Mexican painter Diego Rivera and create a collaborative mural for the library’s Teen Area. For teens. Registration is required.
- Bad Art Night: Calaveras de Azucar (Sugar Skulls) – Northwest Library, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m.
- Enjoy a night of creative fun painting sugar skulls. For adults. Registration is required.
