NORMAN, Okla. – Young adventurers are invited to experience the wonders of natural history at the Sam Noble Museum’s Summer Explorers Camp. With age-appropriate class groups for children 6-12, these discovery-based, week-long sessions provide hands-on learning experiences inspired by museum exhibits and collections.
“Our programs inspire kids to get out in nature and away from the computer and television,” said Laura Vaughn, head of education at the Sam Noble Museum. “We offer authentic experiences with museum objects and fossils that you won’t find anywhere else in our state. Our goal is always to make science accessible through hands-on learning and doing.”
The on-site programs allow children to engage directly with museum specimens, fossils and scientific concepts, while the off-site sessions begin at the museum before heading to local parks for interactive outdoor adventures guided by trained museum educators.
For many families, the museum’s educational programs play a significant role in their connection to Norman. Opportunities for children to make new friends and explore a passion for science can enrich communities and inspire a life-long passion for discovery.
“When we first moved to Norman, my son was 6 years old. The museum, summer classes and programs were a selling point for me in helping us decide on a city here in Oklahoma,” said Monica, a Norman mother. “Our daughter had enjoyed similar classes back home, and I wanted those opportunities for him, too.”
Registration is now open for the Summer Explorers programs, with week-long sessions running from June 9 to Aug. 1. For more information or to register, visit samnoblemuseum.ou.edu/calendar or contact the museum by phone at (405) 325-7977.
The Sam Noble Museum is the officially designated natural history museum for the state of Oklahoma and is located on the University of Oklahoma Norman campus at 2401 Chautauqua Ave.
