Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) government students from Emerson South High School, Southeast High School, Northwest Classen High School and U.S. Grant High School gathered on April 30 at the Clara Luper Center for Educational Services to participate in Generation Citizen’s Spring Civics Day.
The event marked the culmination of a semester-long initiative in which students identified pressing community-based issues, researched their root causes, engaged with local stakeholders and developed actionable solutions. At Civics Day, students presented their proposals to a panel of community advisors, showcasing their research, civic knowledge and commitment to public problem-solving.
Topics ranged from teen homelessness and inadequate street lighting in neighborhoods to improving access to healthcare for seniors, underscoring students’ deep engagement with real-world challenges affecting their communities.
Civics Day provided students with a public platform to demonstrate the power of the youth voice and participatory democracy in action. The event also highlighted the impact of Generation Citizen’s action civics curriculum in equipping young people with the tools to create meaningful change.
Generation Citizen is a national nonprofit dedicated to empowering young people to become active and engaged citizens. Through its civics curriculum, students learn to work together to solve real issues in their communities, gaining lifelong skills in the democratic process.
The event also reflects OKCPS’s ongoing commitment to educational excellence and a rigorous, relevant curriculum. Through programs like Generation Citizen, the district ensures students are not only academically prepared, but also equipped with the civic knowledge, critical thinking and leadership skills necessary for success beyond the classroom.
