PRESS RELEASE: OKC celebrates Bike to Work Day May 16

Cyclists can beat the traffic, get fresh air and enjoy free coffee in Bicentennial Park, 201 N. Walker Ave., from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Friday, May 16, when they participate in Bike to Work Day.

Participants can cycle independently or join a group ride to Bicentennial Park, which is located between City Hall and the Civic Center Music Hall.

Group rides will leave from the following locations:

  • Midwest City Library, 8143 E. Reno Ave. Group meets at 6:30 a.m. Led by BikeOklahoma.
  • Capitol Hill, 2420 S. Robinson Ave. Group meets at 7:30 a.m. Led by Capitol Co-Op.
  • Stars and Stripes Park, 3701 S. Lake Hefner Dr. Group meets at 7 a.m. Led by Celestial Cycles.
  • Lincoln Park Golf Course clubhouse, 4001 NE Grand Blvd. Group meets at 7:15 a.m. Led by the Mayor Taylor Cycling Club.
  • Mesta Park, 1900 N. Shartel Ave. Group meets at 7:30 a.m. Led by RideOKC.
  • Plaza District, 1759 NW 16th St. Group meets at 7:30 a.m. Led by City of OKC.
  • ODOT, 200 NE 21st St. Group meets at 7:10 a.m. Led by ODOT employees and open to the public.

“It’s exciting to see the popularity and momentum of Bike to Work Day continues to build, and it’s inspiring how many people, businesses and organizations want to improve opportunities for people to ride their bikes,” OKC’s Transportation Program Planner Justin Henry said. “Community support and collaboration is critical to advancing our goal of creating a safer and easier environment for people to ride bikes for both recreation and transportation.”

Bike to Work Day is an annual event designed to encourage people to use their bikes for transportation. A list of Bike to Work Day rides in other central Oklahoma communities is at bikemonthok.org.

Bike safety
Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians have a shared responsibility to watch out for each other and follow the rules of the road.

People can visit okc.gov/residents/bike-lane-safety for tips on navigating Oklahoma City streets on two or four wheels. watchformeok.org also provides pro-safety tips for pedestrians, drivers and bicyclists.
